The best laptop for a student is not automatically the newest or most expensive one. It is the least expensive reliable computer that runs every required app, lasts through the day, and still has enough performance and software support for the rest of the course.
For most NZ school and university students, start with a 13–14-inch Windows laptop or MacBook with 8GB RAM at an absolute minimum, an SSD, a good webcam, and active operating-system support. A laptop can look ideal on paper and still be the wrong purchase if a required exam tool, engineering package or design app will not run on it. Ask the school, faculty or programme coordinator for its current device specification before comparing models.

Chromebook vs laptop? A Chromebook is a laptop, but it runs ChromeOS rather than Windows or macOS. Its simplicity can be a strength for supported browser-based learning. It becomes a false economy when a required desktop application forces the student to borrow or replace the device.

Specifications only tell half the story. Keyboard comfort, hinge stability, webcam quality, charger size and device weight affect a student every day. A powerful 16-inch laptop can be a poor campus companion if it is rarely carried because it is too heavy.
5. How much RAM does a student laptop need?
8GB is the floor for light use; 16GB is the safer target for most buyers who want breathing room through a multi-year course. Memory is especially important when video calls, large PDFs, dozens of browser tabs and productivity apps run together. If RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded, buy the capacity you expect to need later—not just this semester.
More RAM does not fix every bottleneck. A very old processor, slow storage, unsupported operating system or worn battery can still make a 16GB laptop a poor choice. Judge the device as a system.
6. Battery life claims: translate the headline into a school day
Manufacturer battery figures are produced under controlled conditions and rarely match a day of video calls, high screen brightness and busy Wi-Fi. For a pre-owned laptop, battery health matters as much as the original claim.
- Ask whether battery condition has been tested and whether any battery fault is disclosed.
- Check whether USB-C charging is supported and how heavy the charger is.
- Think in timetable blocks: classes, commute, library time and access to wall sockets.
- Budget for a future replacement battery if the model allows one economically.
7. Is a refurbished laptop good for students?
It can be an excellent value when the exact model, condition, support life and seller obligations are clear.
